Sarasa 更紗 has its origins in the early 1600s when Portuguese seafaring traders introduced cotton calicos or chintz they acquired in India into Japan. These beautiful exotic chintz textiles quickly became popular among wealthy samurai and merchant classes in the early Edo period. Yazaemon the 7th reinvented the Sarasa big plate he inherited from generation to generation.
Traditional Arita motifs such as phoenix, bamboo, plum, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, and Shippo motifs are inlaid in Mokkou Kirimon 木甲桐紋 pattern.
